It’s a pretty normal day. You just got to the office, checked in with your employees, there’s a certain hint of nervousness in the air, and it doesn’t take you long to find out why.

You quickly realize what happened. You’ve been a victim of a cyber-attack. You were struck by ransomware!

What does this mean?

In case all of this was new to you or in case you just need a recap; Ransomware is a type of malware that can encrypt your files and hold them ransom until you pay a specific amount of money. Pretty straightforward.

Ransomware has been on the rise in recent years, and it can be a huge headache for businesses.

So, in the interest of keeping you informed and protected, we will discuss what ransomware is, how it can hurt your business, and a couple of tips to help you protect yourself from it.

How does it happen?

Ransomware attacks usually happen when an employee clicks on a malicious email attachment or visits a compromised website.

Once the ransomware is on your system, it will start encrypting files. The attackers will then demand a ransom, typically in Bitcoin, to decrypt the files.

Ransomware can be terribly costly for businesses; data loss, legal liabilities, or even completely shutting down your business’s operations.

In some cases, businesses have had to pay millions of dollars in ransom to get their data back. That’s a crippling kick to your business’ revenue.

But what can I do?

There are a few things you can do to protect yourself from ransomware.

First, make sure that you have a robust cyber security plan in place.

This should include things like having up-to-date antivirus software and firewalls, training your employees on cyber security best practices, and having a plan for what to do in the event of a ransomware attack.

Additionally, you should regularly back up your data so that you can restore it if you do fall victim to ransomware.

Backing up your data saves a ton of money!

That’s NOT all, folks!

Ransomware is a serious threat to businesses, but you can protect yourself by being aware of the risks and taking steps to mitigate them.
